What is OEE?

OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) is the industry-standard metric that shows how efficiently a machine uses its planned production time. It combines three loss areas — availability, performance and quality — into a single percentage. See our in-depth OEE calculation guide for a full walkthrough.

How is OEE calculated?

The OEE formula is the product of three components: OEE = Availability × Performance × Quality. Availability is run time over planned time, performance is actual output rate over the ideal rate, and quality is the ratio of good pieces to total pieces. The calculator above applies this formula to your numbers automatically.

What is a good OEE score?

An OEE of 85% or higher is considered world-class. Typical discrete manufacturers run around 60%, while anything below 40% signals a major improvement opportunity. What matters most is not a single number but measuring OEE continuously and moving the trend upward.

How do you improve OEE?

The first step is making losses visible: capture downtime reasons automatically, focus on the largest loss category, and eliminate it with root-cause analysis. An MES that collects real-time machine data removes manual data-entry errors and shortens the improvement loop from weeks to hours. Read our OEE guide for a breakdown of loss types.
